ISLAND  DREAMER

GIVETON GELIN

INTRODUCTION

It began as a question—one carried quietly by a young artist far from home, sitting in practice rooms late at night, searching for a sound that could hold memory, ambition, ancestry, and becoming all at once.

Over time, more than fifty original works emerged— each a marker of growth, curiosity, and identity. What began as personal exploration soon revealed itself as the foundation of something larger

Island Dreamer was not conceived as an album.

Born in The Bahamas and shaped by the rigor of the Juilliard School in New York City, Giveton Gelin’s journey is one of dual belonging: island roots and global reach, inherited tradition and forward motion.

Arriving in New York City in 2017, Giveton quickly distinguished himself as a rare modern trumpet voice.

His sound—technically assured, deeply lyrical, and unmistakably his own—announced the arrival of an artist already in conversation with the lineage of jazz, yet unafraid to reshape it.

MOMENTUM & EXPANSION:

By the time Giveton graduated from Juilliard in 2021, his career was already global in scope.

Beginning in 2019, he joined Jon Batiste as a core collaborator across all major projects, contributing to four Grammy Award–winning albums and expanding his presence far beyond traditional jazz spaces.

His musical relationships span generations and genres—Kenny Garrett, Ron Carter, Jon Batiste, Christian McBride, Bob James, Talib Kweli, Camila Cabello, Wyclef Jean, Macy Gray, Gary Bartz, Kamasi Washington and many more—each collaboration reinforcing his ability to move fluidly between worlds without losing his center.

True Design: THE FIRST STATEMENT

In 2020, before completing his degree, Giveton independently released True Design, his debut album as a bandleader.

Recorded entirely with Juilliard musicians and featuring artists who would soon become defining voices of their respected instruments, the project announced a composer and leader of rare maturity.

ISLAND DREAMER:

The Long Arc (2020–2025)

Beyond the Music:

ISLAND DREAMER
ACADEMY

The years that followed—marked by global pause, reflection, and renewal—allowed Island Dreamer to fully reveal itself.

This work is expansive by design: a three-part, thirty- one–track cycle composed and revisited across seven years. Its emotional center returns again and again
to The Bahamas—its rhythms, silences, memory, and spirit.

Each composition functions as a chapter, carrying fragments of searching, longing, ancestry, and return.

Parts I and II explore identity in motion—memory unfolding, questions forming.

Part III arrives at The Theme.

The Theme is the distilled essence of the entire journey—a musical palindrome, spare yet hypnotic.

By 2025, Giveton’s writing had reached a place of restraint and clarity: saying more with less, compressing years of experience into a single phrase that feels inevitable.

Island Dreamer does not end on the page or the stage.

Through an exclusive pre-sale of the Island Dreamer Collector's Case, Giveton generated $176,000, which became the foundation for Island Dreamer Academy—an educational initiative designed to uplift young musicians from The Bahamas.

Over the past two years, Island Dreamer Academy has: brought 5–7 elite Bahamian students annually to New York City.

Providing exposure to world-class institutions including Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School.

This mission is deeply personal.

At age 14, Giveton himself was given the opportunity to travel to New York—an experience that transformed his life and set his trajectory.

The circle is intentional. What was once received is now extended.

Giveton Gelin BIO
Written by Kevin Powell, GRAMMY-nominated poet

“Giveton is one of the few players that I have heard that actually sings through the horn.”
—ROY HARGROVE

Giveton Gelin. Nicholas Payton. Roy Hargrove. Wynton Marsalis. Arturo Sandoval. Lee Morgan. Hugh Masekela. Miles Davis. Clifford Brown. Dizzy Gillespie. Louis Armstrong.

This is the ancient, majestic family tree of otherworldly trumpeters of which Giveton is the latest prodigy. The branches of that tree stretch from New Orleans to South Carolina, from Cuba to South Africa, from East Saint Louis to Harlem. And from Haiti, holy land of his parents, to the sleepy eyelids of The Bahamas, where Giveton was born and raised.

Indeed, as the son of Haitian immigrants, Giveton was introduced to music in his mother’s belly. Mom was the prophetic lead singer of his preacher dad’s soulful group called The Messengers. So be it the hypnotic hymns bouncing off the church pews, or the earthy island melodies of the English-speaking Caribbean, or the pulsating Creole grooves of Haiti’s Kompa sounds, music is hand-carved into Giveton’s DNA.

And just as his father spit biblical verse from atop his head, plucked Haitian folk melodies at will, and fluently juggled guitar, trumpet, saxophone, piano, and bass, Giveton was digesting this world-class cultural education as the art of improvisation, as his ticket to freedom.

That is why his musical journey began so young, at age five, playing drums and piano in his father’s church. By age ten Giveton had picked up the trumpet for the first time, as a member of his school’s marching band.

But it was jazz, a couple of years later, that would change the trajectory of Giveton’s life. When he heard the mighty sonic musings of Marsalis, Hargrove, and Payton, it was as if God in the flesh had personally sanctified Giveton’s trumpet. And that horn has become Giveton Gelin’s sacred vessel.

With a graduation stop at the prestigious The Julliard School in New York City, Giveton has been mentored by both the late, great Roy Hargrove and Adrian D'Aguilar, one of The Bahamas’ most renowned musicians. For sure, Giveton has morphed into a dynamic trumpeter, composer, and educator, one who has performed with a diverse range of giants, like Christian McBride, Kamasi Washington, and Oscar- and Grammy-winner Jon Batiste.

Says the legendary Wynton Marsalis, another important role model, “Giveton is definitely an important part of the wave of younger musicians who have the intellect and intensity to perpetuate the highest levels of our music."

But where does Giveton Gelin see himself in all of the music, performances, and hoopla around his prodigious talents?

He pauses and ponders the question, then the words flow as effortlessly as a song riff from his trumpet: “My goal is to create CLASSICS regardless of genre. Music that has its own life force within it.”

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

Island Dreamer is a testament to what happens when artistry, integrity, and responsibility coexist.

It is a tradition honored without imitation. Innovation shaped by lived experience.

Success is measured not only by acclaim, but by what it returns to the community.

Island Dreamer songbook is an invitation—to listen deeply, to trace the journey, and to recognize that dreams, when nurtured with discipline and purpose, can become legacies.

ISLAND DREAMER III OF III
2026

Bahamian trumpeter/multi-instrumentalist Giveton Gelin releases Island Dreamer: III of
III; his jazz-inflected, Caribbean-cadenced musical tribute to the Bahamas.
The New York-based, 27 year-old, trumpeter, keyboardist, arranger, composer and Juilliard
graduate Giveton Gelin is one of the leading Young Lions of the 21st century, as evidenced by
Wynton Marsalis’ praise of Gelin as a musician who have the “intellect and intensity to
perpetuate the highest levels of our music,” and Roy Hargrove’s assessment of Gelin as “a
wonderful talent who sings through his horn.”

IMG_2086.JPG

The record is heavily concerned with living heritage, with “Blue Hole,” for example, being inspired by the famous underwater sinkholes of The Bahamas. The emotional center may be “I Solemnly Swear to Live,” featuring virtuoso pianist Jon Batiste on piano. The arrangement stripped down to trumpet and piano alone, and Gelin has explained the piece as a deeply personal vow to live intentionally. Island Dreamer: III of III is a powerful declaration of identity. It’s an unusually personal kind of contemporary jazz project in which virtuosity matters, but the story behind the notes matters just as much.

ABOUT
ISLAND DREAMER RECORDS

Island Dreamer Records was birthed from the desire for authentic stories to be told by the artists themselves.

In pursuit of making this a reality, we have built what will become one of the most viable options for

independent artists coming out of the Caribbean.

My three albums coming out this year will serve as the case study for any artist interested in becoming an Island Dreamer Records artist.

A Different Kind of Record Label

IDR’s infrastructure is not built like a typical record label.

We’re not interested in your masters or publishing. We virtually own nothing.

We’re interested in uplifting truly talented artists from the Caribbean — artists with authentic stories and something meaningful to say — in the same way I shared my story with the world.

How It Works

You are an artist who:

  • Lives in one of the countries within the Caribbean region

  • Has an authentic story that needs to be told

  • Has undeniable musical ability

  • Has a clear artistic vision

  • Has music that showcases that vision

IDR artists will have a fully developed portfolio on this website. This visibility will allow viewers to fund your release directly.

This portfolio will be one of the ways independent artists can generate the capital needed to create an impactful release. In addition to the set portfolio, IDR will also help artists secure funding for their musical works.

After achieving the intended budget, IDR will provide access to the label’s full infrastructure, giving the artist the best possible chance of success in today’s music market.

Case Study

Again, my three albums this year will serve as the case study for anyone interested in becoming an Island Dreamer Records artist.

The proof is in the pudding. All of my success in the coming years will be the result of the same methods I will be sharing with you.

It’s up to you to use your story and your talents to create opportunities for yourself.

What’s your story?

Share it with us.

Island Dreamers — Keep on dreaming.
